Planning a move abroad can be overwhelming. But it’s possible to make your dream come true if you plan ahead and get the right resources. I’ve put together this small list of resources that have helped me to think more about my plans. As well as how I want to execute them over time. Keep reading to learn more. If you are currently country scouting, you will find the information here useful. And if you’ve already moved abroad and want to share some resources, drop them in the comments. We appreciate you.
InterNations:
I first learned about InterNations.org many years ago when I was interested in moving to Spain to teach English. The website has a list of resources for free, but as members there are more resources available to you, including connecting with expats in local city you are interested in moving to. The website also puts out data annually called the Expat Insider. This data highlights the Quality of Life Index for certain countries, as well as the Best and Worst Places for Expats. From my point of view the overall mission of the site is to create community.
Expatica:
As with other relocation websites, Expatica.com provides you with a lot of information about the country you are interested in moving to. Choose a country and you will find the website transforms into a guide dedicated to that country, including where to live, where to work, where to go to school and where to find healthcare. This is the site that will get you on the way to understanding the country you are interested in without the frills. The resources available work for a variety of people moving abroad, including families and graduate students.
Go Abroad:
Using the Goabroad.com site is a great way to get an introduction to being abroad long-term. Go Abroad offers opportunities for study abroad, not only in the usual University setting but as a student of a variety of technical fields including culinary arts. There are resources for TEFL certification as well as volunteer opportunities. The site is a great way to compare programs that would work for your specific needs as a student or working professional.
Numbeo:
The wealth of information provided by Numbeo.com to people thinking about moving abroad has been exceptional. From the cost of living comparison tool to the crime rate and pollution index, Numbeo.com gives you the opportunity in your planning to look at the numbers not just the pretty photos. It’s easy to get carried away by a beautiful coastline when you want to “visit” a country. But when you consider a move abroad, it’s important to know what the cost of living will be whether you are there in retirement and living on a pension or planning to work remotely.
Youtube:
YouTube has definitely been one of my favorite resources for moving abroad. The experiences of so many people have been highlighted. From the Financially Independent Retiring Early-F.I.R.E movement to TEFL teachers exploring Asia. There is a wealth of knowledge on YouTube that will allow you to find the lane that works for you. Check out these amazing videos from YouTubers like Stephanie Perry and Roshida Dowe that will put you on the right path to discovering how and where you can begin your journey to moving abroad.
Planning a move abroad is not something to take lightly. It is a journey that takes time and planning. Whether you are thinking about making a move next month or five years. The journey starts somewhere and you can get there with the right resources.
