Embracing sustainable fashion is a great way to stay stylish while combating the effects of fast fashion. I am not a minimalist by any means, but it’s important for me to shop wisely, purchasing items of the best quality that come from communities that function without exploiting their workers. If you’re interested in reviving your closet without breaking the bank, keeping reading to discover some great ways to embrace sustainable fashion.

1. Thrifting and Second-Hand Shopping:

Thrifting and second-hand shopping can be a great way to embrace sustainable fashion. From local consignment shops in the community to Goodwill and Savers. These stores not only serve as a way to slow the effects of fast fashion, but they show there are alternatives to shopping for new items each season. Some of my favorite places to shop second-hand has been Ebay and ThredUp.

2. Alternations and Repairs to Damaged Clothing:

Alterations and repairs to damaged clothing can be another great way to maintain a sustainable closet. Clothes can also be repurposed in order to prevent the items from holding space in your closet. Finding a good tailor or seamstress can be who stands between you and your favorite pair of jeans. I find this to be one of the best investments to maintaining a sustainable closet. Research the best in your community and be sure to take a look at customer reviews before making a final decision.

3. Shop Your Closet:

There is nothing like watching Alyssa Beltempo “shop her closet”. Watching her create amazing outfits over and over again from items right in her closet has always been inspiring to me. It reminds me there is no need to buy new every season. There is no need to depend on fast fashion. Many times as fashionistas we put items away at the end of each season and forget they even exist. But, what better way to rediscover some real gems in your wardrobe than going through and “shopping”, making outfits out of different items you find.

4. Participating in Clothing Swaps:

Clothing swaps are a great way to connect with people in your community. Whether the clothing swaps are for you or your children, there is so much to find when you are able to share what you have and gain from some amazing items others might have in their closet. I did clothing swaps with my children’s clothes for years. I find this to be the most effective way to maintain a wardrobe for children, especially since they grow quickly. Clothing swaps can be efficient for adult wardrobes as well. The important thing to do is to find the right community. Be on the look out for online groups in your community that can be found on Facebook.

5. Renting Clothes:

What can be more convenient and economical than renting clothes when you need them and returning them when you don’t. How many times have you needed a dress for a wedding, purchased the dress then realize you never want to wear it again. Services like Rent the Runway and Stitch Fix are a great solution to avoid filling your closet with unwanted and unworn clothing. This is not only a great way to shop less and save more, but a great way to keep clothes out of landfills and into the hands of people who really need them.
