Why Slow Fashion?

I have always loved style and fashion. From the time I was in High School my dream was to work as a designer and fashion editor at a magazine company. My mother worked for a woman who was an editor at Vogue when I was in High School. Visiting her job at Conde Nast in New York was a dream come true for me. Reality hit and I realized this route may not have been for me at the time and I decided to go on to school to become a Chiropractor. From there my career aspirations changed again to what I’m doing now full-time as an educator. But my love of fashion never went away.

During the lockdown last year with all of the down time I had, I did a closet clear out of 90% of the things I had in my closets. From there I wanted to fill my closet with new items but found it would cost me thousands starting from scratch with quality items. I decided to do more research on how I could save money and began to learn more about slow fashion. What is slow fashion? This is the opposite of fast fashion. It means being thoughtful of where clothes are purchased. And how clothes are made.

Finding Fashion Inspiration

I found inspiration from many bloggers and Youtubers. The two most inspirational vloggers from YouTube have been Audrey Coyne and Alyssa Beltempo. Both ladies encourage their followers to understand their personal style before making drastic changes in their wardrobe. Alyssa encourages her followers to shop their closet and seek out items in their closet they can style before purchasing a new item. Audrey’s style has changed over the years. Considering she no longer lives in a big city she shows her followers how they can be intentional with their purchases and embrace their own personal style without overspending.

What is the Cashmere Closet?

I decided to take my inspiration and turn it into something I could share with my travel community online. You can find The Cashmere Closet on Instagram by clicking the highlighted link. The cashmere closet is a space where I can share tips on how to make purchases and style thrifted items. It’s also a space to share how to clean the thrifted items. I named the page the Cashmere Closet because of the amount of cashmere sweaters I own. Living in the northeast of the U.S.A where a majority of the year is cold, it means I have to buy and style more cold weather clothing items throughout the year than warm weather items. This also taught me how versatile cashmere could be in dressing up or dressing down an outfit.

Stay Tuned

My long term goals are to continue sharing my tips on styling and caring for my items. Since I’ve reached my capacity for purchasing thrifted items this year, I will share how and where to purchase them. The process for clearing out my wardrobe, changing my style and selling my items on eBay lead me think about selling my own vintage items online. So stay tuned for more as I continue this journey.
