There’s no secret I’m no fan of New England winters. But every year the north calls me and I have to answer. I don’t know why I feel the urge to visit Canada during winter, but it always seems like the best time to explore snow covered mountains and quaint city streets. Although I still hold Montreal dear to my heart, I fell in love with Quebec City and all it has to offer in art, food and culture. Looking to visit Canada next winter, make Quebec City your number one destination. Here’s a list of 7 ways you can enjoy your time there in winter.

1. Experience Luxury at Chateau de Frontenac

You don’t have to stay at the Chateau de Frontenac also known as the Fairmont to tour the hotel and learn about the historical connections it has to the city. If you do decide to stay at the Fairmont, you can treat yourself to many fine dining experiences and spa treatments.

2. Dropping into Chocolate Heaven

Visit Chocolato where the ceilings are dripping with chocolate. Although they have an assortment of cakes, ice creams and chocolates. Chocolato also offers a delicious, decadent experience if you want to order hot chocolate. This is definitely a great place to warm up during your winter vacation.

3. Visiting the Musée de la Civilisation à Québec

There are many amazing museums to visit in the city, especially in the Old Town area. My favorite of all was the Musée de Civilisation. The artifacts represented the history of early French-Canada, its past, present and future. The museum also ensures young children enjoy their time at the museum, with an interactive dress-up area on the lower level of the museum. Children under 11 can visit the museum for FREE! Adults over 31 pay $17 and young adults 18-30 enter for a reduced fee of $11.

4. Exploring the Historic District of Old Quebec City an UNESCO World Heritage Site

If you love visiting UNESCO World Heritage sites like I do, exploring the historic district of Old Quebec City will be a dream during winter. The cobble-stoned streets and historic architecture will take you back to another place and time. Put on your best winter boots, gloves and hat and take your time exploring the shops and restaurants of the Upper Town and Lower Town of this old city.

5. Taking the Plunge Down the Dufferin Terrace Toboggan Slides

The Toboggan slides can be terrifying for some and exciting for others. This was definitely the highlight of Old Quebec City for my children when we visited back in March. Check out a link to the website Here! Get more information on seasonal schedules and rates. Remember the slides are only open December to March and a family of four can head down the slide for $10.

6. Visiting the Cathedral-Basilica of Notre-Dame de Québec

The Notre-Dame Cathedral of Quebec was absolutely beautiful and stunning inside and out. Definitely worth a visit if you are staying in Old Quebec City.

7. Experience the Holidays All Over Again at La Boutique de Noel de Quebec

The Holidays are never over in Quebec City. They have the most amazing shop with all things Christmas and Santa. Looking for ornaments, looking for Christmas Trees and Christmas cards. This store has everything you need. My children were like kids in a candy store the moment they saw this beautiful little shop. I was so impressed we stopped there twice on separate days.

  3. It is my all time wish to experience winter. I live in a tropical climate where there is no snow all year round. So, playing with snow is something I would like to experience someday. I am so interested with the Chocolate Heaven. It feels like once I got there, I can spend all my day in there just enjoying chocolates. Thanks for sharing.

  4. We may visit Quebec this October, so I’m already starting to gather all the information I come across. The city looks lovely, very French in feel. 2-3 days should give us enough time to soak it all in.

    1. You will love it for sure. You will definitely need more than 2-3 days. I love visiting Canada every year. I did Montreal last year. Definitely going back next year too.

  5. Quebec City sounds like a great place to visit! It’s nice that you can tour the hotel if your budget doesn’t allow you to stay and get pampered with all the luxuries they offer. I’d probably visit that Chocolato a few times if I went there! The Old Town seems like a perfect place to stroll around, but I wouldn’t miss the toboggan shenanigans either! Nice tips on what to do there!
