Regional Train Travel: Rome to Florence
Navigating train travel in Italy can be stressful, complicated and expensive if you don’t do your research ahead of time. Traveling from Rome to Florence we needed to use the regional train line called Tren Italia. I’ve learned from experience traveling with my family that preparation makes a difference in how successful the trip is. We didn’t book any of our tickets in advance online, but we were able to buy our tickets when we got to the train station. This lead to a lot of running and rushing once we did figure out how to purchase tickets and validate them to make it from Rome to Florence. But I’ve learned a lot and decided to share it. Here are some tips on seating and tickets.
Seating and Space for Baggage:
Seating varies throughout the train depending on the ticket you purchase. First class tickets are always the most comfortable. There are some train cars with separate space for baggage over head and some with space at the entrance of the train car. As we were on the late train from Rome to Florence the train was empty, meaning there was more than enough space for our baggage.
Purchasing and Validating Tickets:
Train tickets can be purchased online or at the station. There are different train lines you will see when purchasing a regional ticket. Lines like Frecciarossa and Regionale Veloce will be on the list. Each train will have a variety of departure times. The time it will take to get to the destination will vary as well. When we took the late train from Rome to Florence and it took 3 hours to get there. There are other trains that take as little as an hour and a half to arrive. Ticket prices will range from over 21 Euros to under 80 Euros, even if it’s for the same departure and arrival location. Before you board the train remember to validate the tickets.
Enjoying Two Major Cities:
Take in the best of Rome and Florence. There’s so much to see in both locations, take advantage of the fast travel time you will get by traveling on a regional train from Rome to Florence.
