Getting around Barcelona was easy from the beginning of the trip to the end. From our arrival at the airport to the Aerobus we took to get back to the airport to go home, follow my easy tips for getting around this beautiful city.
1. Get the Hola Barcelona Travel Card at the Airport:
The Hola Barcelona Card can be purchased at the airport. Upon arrival we were able to go to the travel card window and easily purchase the travel card. The cards can be purchased by hours. If you are visiting for 5 days you can purchase the 120 hour card for under 40 Euros. With this card you can use the (subway) metro, trams, buses and Rodalies Renfe trains throughout the city. Imagine visiting for 5 days and being able to go everywhere you want around the city, unlimited for under 40 Euros.
2. Catch the Aerobus to the City-Center of the Barcelona:
Getting to and from the airport can be a breeze if you catch the Aerobus. On arrival you can catch the Aerobus outside of Terminal 1 (T1) or Terminal 2 (T2). Catching the A1 or A2 can get you to Placa Catalunya. The buses run for 24 hours and arrive every 15 minutes. The bus will cost you 5.90 Euros one way and you can easily pay onboard using card or cash. Check out my previous post for more information on catching the Aerobus. This post also includes the differences in the Aerobus ticket and the Barcelona Travel Card.
3. Remember to Use the Tram:
Remember to use the Trams. Although, it can be easy to get around the city using the Metro. There are some places that may require a quick tram ride, especially if you are trying to avoid transfers. Depending on where you are in the city, you can choose to take the tram over the bus or metro if it gets you closer to your destination. It is also a great way to see the city above ground.
4. The Bus Can Get you Where you Need to Go:
The buses in Barcelona can get you where you need to go. From Parc Guell to the Barceloneta Beach you can take the buses around the city to your favorite destinations. It was easy getting from one place to another with the luxury of seeing the city and getting to know different areas. A great tip about buses is to remember to press the bell when you approaching your stop. If there isn’t anyone at the stop the bus will keep driving by. Also remember not all buses are created equal in Barcelona. Be sure the bus you get on is TMB and will take the travel card you purchased at the beginning of your trip.
5. Get Easy Transfers Using Different Trains:
I have never been to a city where transfers were made this easy. From one section of the city to another. You can use your travel card to get on the Rodalies Renfe or the metro. It is as easy as just pushing your card through the terminal slot and your card coming right back out. If you have a map you are in good hands but you can easily use one of the maps on the trains themselves to know where you can transfer to. The color coded lines made it easy to determine metro which line would get us closest to where we needed to be.
