Welcome to Stockholm:
What’s not to love when it comes to visiting the city of Stockholm. The Swedish capital is home to over 965,232 people and is actually a series of 14 islands connected by a number of bridges. The name Stockholm means Log Island in Swedish. The streets of Stockholm are lined with cobble-stones, side-walk cafes, parks, and beautiful buildings. There’s so much to see especially in Gamla Stan. This can be done with or without a guide. This is Stockholm’s old town, meaning it’s filled with 18th century homes and churches, including the Stockholm Stock Exchange Building, the Royal Palace and the Stockholm Cathedral. When it comes to architecture there’s a mixture of old-world and modern. Interested in planning a trip to Stockholm. Click the link for more information.
Photo Guide of the City:
Let these photos be your guide to the Old Town area of Stockholm.
These cobbled streets were frequently used by merchants hundreds of years ago. But remember to wear good walking shoes when exploring the streets now.
Less than a meter wide, this is the narrowest alley in the city of Stockholm. There’s a great view from the top and the bottom of the steps. Let the signs guide you.
Statue of Carl XIV Johan. King of Sweden and Norway from 1818 to 1844.
The winding streets seem to go on and on as you’re walking through Gamla Stan. In the distance is St. Gertrude’s Church.
Walking around Gamla Stan there are a number of unique doors to be seen. This one certainly caught my eye with the colors. I did not go on a walking tour with a guide while visiting, but this would’ve made an even better experience.
The fork splits here. Go right and head to the upper-level streets. Head left and the city gets quieter with less tourists. Many of the restaurants are less busy and there are gallery shops and boutiques with beautiful items you would be happy to take home after the trip.
Taking in the views, people-watching in Stortorget Square. Eating at Grillska Huset is certainly worth it when looking for a great meal and good company.
Explore Stockholm:
Where do I begin with these views. As you look out in the distance and see many other islands in front of you, you’re reminded of how beautiful this city is as the sun starts to set. The Swedish Royal Palace is on the left along with the Royal Armory.
Food, food and more food. There are so many places to stop and have coffee, cake, ice cream, salmon and even meatballs. There’s something for everyone on every corner.
More views of Stortorget with the Nobel Museum on the right and several restaurants on the left. The large fountain in the middle is a central meeting point for visitors. This square is also the stage for cultural events that happen annually in the city. Many Swedes come to the square dressed up in traditional clothes and dance to traditional music. The Royal Family even joins in on the fun.
Plan Your Visit:
Explore the city on foot or by bike, but certainly take a few hours to explore the city with or without a guide and learn as much as there is to know about this amazing city and it’s architecture. Check out the link for more on tours around Stockholm.
