Ferry to Tallinn from Helsinki:

Getting to and from Tallinn out of Helsinki was a breeze when traveling by ferry. The Tallink ferry gets people from Helsinki to Tallinn in two hours with a variety of transportation options right outside the terminal. The Tallink ferry like other ferries in the region have great seating and dining options for passengers. If you’re looking to get some shopping done before you get to your destination you can find perfume, makeup, clothing and bags. There’s also a small supermarket on board and a liquor depot.

Tallinn Old Town:

The Old Town is one of Europe’s most well preserved medieval cities. The city wall is still intact and visitors can even walk the old city wall for a small fee. If you’re curious to learn more about the city, booking a walking tour with Viator gives you great value for the price. There’s so much to learn as the city is split into two areas. The upper town and lower town. The differences are clear to see with the upper town highlighting the cities previous close ties to Russia. Heading through the Old Town you see how much the city has changed but also how much of it’s past it continues to hold onto. From the architecture to the religious sites, I was surprised by what I learned and the things I saw.

Where to Eat and Shop:

Restaurants in the Old Town range from traditional to international. There was also no shortages of coffee shops around there as well. I was craving Indian food the entire time I was there for some reason and tracked down an amazing restaurant called Chakra for some of the best Indian food I’ve had in my life. Not only did they impress with the food but the service as well. If you’re interest in some traditional Estonian food, look no further than Peppersack where you get not only traditional food from the medieval period, but the restaurant is completely themed with the staff dressed up as well. There were other restaurants nearby with the same theme, but the food here by far was the best in the area.

Have a sweet tooth? You could find coffee and cake shops on almost every corner, making it the ideal place for those who just want to sit down for a cup of coffee or tea during the cold months. If you’re looking for a quick snack? Find some great spots around the city where you can find a variety of meat pies on the menu. When it comes to finding things to bring home with you, it’s always best to shop local. Some of the best places to get items include the St. Catherine’s Guild Katariinagild where I purchased a lovely handmade scarf and Little Red House Alldesign where I found some beautiful earrings made by local artisans.

Getting to Know the City at Night:

The vibe in the city changes at night. From bars to clubs the city comes to life. I realized as I was getting to know the city, there is a college town vibe to it. There’s a large group of international students who attend Tallinn University and Tallinn University of Technology , bringing some youthfulness to this old city. Curious about where to go at night? Check out the Club with No Name, Gruuv and a variety of karaoke bars around the Old Town, for a good time.
